Many people, when it comes to the NFL, have often said, "If I were General Manager, that team would be a lot better." Have you been one of these people? Is the fact of being about $300 million short keep you from proving what you know to be correct -- that you are an excellent judge of NFL talent? Well, here's your proving ground: the Wasatch Football League (WFL), and Action! PC Football League. No, this is not like your ordinary fantasy football league, this takes REAL skill. If you are looking for a league in which you pick offensive skill position players and watch their performance on Sunday, hoping that the coaches will use them correctly, then this league is NOT for you! In this league, which has operated since 1989; you draft, manage and coach real-life NFL players through the regular season, the playoffs and the eventual Super Bowl -- if you prove worthy to get there. One of the most important aspects of picking a simulation fantasy football league to join is stability. In an era where fantasy leagues rise and plummet like comets, the WFL remains a fixed star. With over ten years of experience, we definately know what we are doing and have the ability and the knowledge to be around for a long, long time. The WFL is challenging and demands commitment from all the coaches who are involved. If there is one attribute that is demanded by potiential WFL coaches, it is commitment. The WFL is an Action! PC Football (APCF) computer based league. We are formally an APBA-based league. The league is currently an eighteen-team league with plans to expand in the near future. We offer continuous ownership and realistic play. There are four division winners and four wild-card teams who make the playoffs. Each coach can own up to 60 NFL players. Our coaches build and revise their teams through the pre-season draft (in August), collegiate draft (in April -- three rounds, including a bonus round), free agency and trading. Each Spring, every NFL team is "carded" players by APCF from the previous season and any previously unowned rookie players will be drafted. Previously owned players will be placed in the free agent market. Over 1,500 NFL players are available for play in the WFL. Of these players, only 900 will actually suit up in the league. We have the NFL salary cap in place to not allow "stashing" of players which occurs in other leagues. Our salary cap is 10% above the NFL's cap -- and teams much comply with the cap at all times. DraftingDraft Day is held in early-to-mid August depending upon everyone's vacation schedule. The draft will be held at the home of the commissioner and starts promptly at 8a.m. PST/11a.m. EST. We hold a "Chat Room" on the Internet to have the draft "live" for everyone to participate in. This will not only allow for the draft to occur more quickly, but this will allow you to have a real "GM Feel." Drafts can be completed in half the time they normally would, and it will also give you an incredible option. For example, let's say that your pick is three spots away and you covet a hard-hitting linebacker, but you know the coach in the spot ahead of you is also looking at that player seriously. You can send a private e-mail to the coaches ahead of his spot and work out a trade privately and land the player you want! The WFL takes full advantage of the latest technology, and with the above senerio, drafting will be an incredible experience. Following the draft, we have a "live" bidding process for the available free agents, so you can fill your roster needs. Extra TwistBecause this league is big on player knowledge, we hold a collegiate draft prior to the NFL's draft (the morning of). Each team will have a first and second round draft picks to select players who are elligible for the NFL draft. There is also a "bonus" round, a pick which cannot be traded. This allows for the draftnik to really come through on a "sleeper." This adds extra excitment to draft day to discover which NFL team drafts your new players. You will find yourself screaming at the T.V. "Don't pick MY guy!" when the Bengals pick <vbg>. The selction order is done in lottery style, so every team has a shot at the #1 pick, which could be a Troy Aikman, or a Ki-Jana Carter. Player PerformanceEver wonder how Emmit Smith might perform without a top quarterback or a weak offensive line? Or how Trent Dilfer might perform with a solid surrounding cast? While every NFL player performs just as they did that season, that is only for their respective team. If you remove a player and put them into a different enviornment, their performance could change drasticly. This is where the art of drafting, trading and free agency comes into play for a coach in the WFL. Player UsagePlayers are limited in their use in the WFL. We do not allow part-timers to dominate the league, and for good reason -- not many would care for a virtual non-star such as Glyn Milburn to lead the league in rushing. For this reason, each passer, receiver and rusher is limited to 110% of their actual real-life attempts for that season. Limits are carried over to the playoffs as well. Players there are limited to 10% of their actual attempts. Playing gamesEach game is to be played live, coach vs. coach through NetMeeting. If a "live" game cannot occur, the home coach will play his team vs. the robot coach. Since playing against the robot is an advantage, Home Field Advantage will be set to TRUE and the visiting team is placed in the Home Team slot. This will give the visiting team an advantage on their offense and defense, which should equal any advantage of playing against the robot. SchedulingThe WFL has a sixteen-game schedule just as the NFL does, and the week runs from Monday to Sunday. Games are to be reported to the Commissioner, with the stats by midnight Eastern Time. You are also required to send the files and game writeup to the Commissioner and your opponent. NewslettersA very detailed newsletter is available the day after the completion of the week's games (Monday) on the WFL Web Site. Included are: up-to-date standings, game highlights, league leaders (when applicable), inside info, trading corner and injury updates. YearbookWhile most leagues just give the prior year's stats of each team, the WFL goes much, much farther. We include comprehensive statistics. In fact, there are three pages of stats per team generated in the yearbook! Also, all-time team vs. team, year in review, active and all-time leaders are included. Also in the works is compete records for Super Bowl, Playoffs and All-Time Records. The Yearbook also includs full-color pictures. CostThe big question, how much is this league going to set me back? That's the best part, because we aren't here to make a profit -- just to break even. You will not find $90-120 fees here, in fact they are far and below that level. New league coach set up fee is a one time charge of $25 and league season dues are $30. You will need to own a copy of the current APCF computer game, and the Current Season Disk as well. Parting ShotI hope that the above has answered your questions concerning the operations of the WFL. We are a very stable league and very competitive. If you are interested in joining and fortunate enough to earn a coaching spot, you will take over an existing franchise from a previous coach. You will have a full roster to work with. Expansion is always a possibility in the WFL just as it is in the NFL, we hope to expand in the next two years to twenty teams. We do have guaranteed entrance into the league. All applicants who meet the criteria are billed a $25 entrance fee and are guaranteed a spot in the league. If there are no vacancies, the league will expand to accomodate the new member(s). After just one year in the league your knowledge of pro football will increase beyond imagination. You will have full knowledge of nearly every NFL player just as you know the players on your favorite team. If the above description sounds like a league in which you would have an interest in joining, please contact the commissioner as soon as possible. Open teams go quickly, and the waiting list fills up just as fast! We'd be happy to have you along for the upcoming season, which should be our best yet! |
